An ode to the miniskirt

The miniskirt is not just a piece of clothing around one’s waist, it is a statement.

An ode to the miniskirt

We explore some of the most glorious and life-changing moments of the miniskirt, all over the world, and in India, especially.

Swinging Sixties

An ode to the miniskirt

The miniskirt gained popularity all over the world especially in the 1960s, the golden decade of Feminism, when Germaine Greer and Gloria Steinem patronised it. The tiny skirts, clubbed with high platforms, became a worldwide fashion statement in the following decade, when the world was high on Flower Power.

Princess Diana

An ode to the miniskirt

She brought in a whiff of fresh air to British Fashion in the 1980s, with her hemlines, which, more often than not, were above the knee. The Royal sartorial code would never be the same again.

Carrie Bradshaw

An ode to the miniskirt

Yes, we're aware that she's not real. But her fashion is. Sarah Jessica Parker's character in Sex & the City, which was aired on American television screen throughout the 1990s, inspired and continues to inspire women with fashion, and her minis are probably some of the most viewed clothes on the Internet. So there.

The leggy lasses

An ode to the miniskirt

At the same time in India, there came these girls with endless legs. When Madhuri Dixit appeared in a tiny pink skirt for Ek Do Teen, Bollywood fashion went a notch higher. Then, Shilpa Shetty's red miniskirt, to which Akshay Kumar sang 'Chura Ke Dil Mera' to, would one day be a part of Bollywood folklore.Karisma Kapoor made entire films wearing miniskirts.

Britney Spears

An ode to the miniskirt

Then, one day, came another teen sensation, and we didn't know where her skirts started and where they ended. With her suggestive "Baby, one more time", this girl-woman was what every girl in the world wanted to look like.

Club culture

An ode to the miniskirt

With the era of remixes came the nightclub culture in India, and you wouldn't be seen dead in anything but a miniskirt at them.

Tennis and Sania

An ode to the miniskirt

Well, tennis courts were always a place to check out the best minis, and with Sania Mirza as India's rising star, we got to see a lot more of it. It even earned her a fatwa.

The Dhoom Films

An ode to the miniskirt

The films under the Yashraj banner, always the trendsetters, were moving away from chiffon saris and onto biker babes and Barbie doll lookalikes. The miniskirt, therefore, became a must in their Dhoom films.

IPL

An ode to the miniskirt

Nothing helped the popularity of miniskirts in India as the IPL. No, the players wore them only when they dressed up as Romans for cola ads. The real deal came from the cheerleaders, whose 'uniforms' became a matter of national interest.

Road ahead

An ode to the miniskirt

Miniskirts get shorter and raunchier - case in point Deepika's bold act in Dum Maaro Dum, but there is certainly no diminishing its appeal.

Every woman has 22 useless items in her wardrobe

Even if wardrobes of the fairer sex are bulging with loads of dresses, in every woman's closet there are 22 items she never wears.

Every woman has 22 useless items in her wardrobe

Though most women across the world don't actually get to wear everything they own, they absolutely refuse to throw out their clothes, according to the Daily Mail.
In Britain, women spend more than 1.6 billion pounds ($2.5 billion) on more than 500 million items of clothing they will never wear.
Placed on a clothes rail, the unworn clothes would stretch to 25,000 km, equivalent to four-and-a-half times the distance between London and New York.
Millions of purchases that seemed to be a good idea in the shop - whether they were a bargain or a design worn by a celebrity - have now turned out to be a waste.
Rash buys are the main reason for the unworn clothing pile-up, according to 45 per cent of the women questioned.
Just one in eight women regularly clears out their wardrobes, while one in 50 delays the dreaded cleaning day for at least 10 years.

Every woman has 22 useless items in her wardrobe

Jeans are the most common item of unworn clothes, with 88 per cent saying they own at least one pair that they would never be seen out in.
One in five women hoard up to six pairs of shoes that will never be worn. And almost everyone owns at least one top they "would not be seen dead in".
More than half of the women say that guilt over wasting the money keeps them from throwing out unwanted clothes.
Some 17 per cent hoard particular styles in the hope of a fashion revival.
Men are not much better. They have 19 items of unworn clothing lurking in their wardrobes.
More than a third admit their unworn items are largely sales items.

Every woman has 22 useless items in her wardrobe

Sue Leeson, a spokesman for shopping channel QVC - which carried out the survey - said: "Hoarding clothes is a form of nostalgia - but it's impractical."
"Finding out what you have already means that you can become a smart shopper and focus your wardrobe, buying key pieces that coordinate with each other properly."

Indian designer Amit GT to showcase at Saatchi

Indian designer Amit GT, who styled for the likes of Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone and Kareena Kapoor, is set to showcase at the Saatchi Gallery in London.

Indian designer Amit GT to showcase at Saatchi

The designer will exhibit his pre-spring Summer 2012 collection for three days starting Aug 7.
"It is an arts meet fashion event for trend defining designers and luxury brands. There will be a list of international icons in design industry like Vivienne Westwood, and brands like Kenzo, Pucci, Valentino, Givenchy who will be showing alongside," Amit told IANS.
The designer, who was showered with appreciation and accolades soon after launching his own prêt label called Senses by Amit GT in January 2003, has participated in fashion weeks at Paris, Milan, London and Dubai.
However, making collection for the art gallery is a challenge for him.
"The biggest challenge in designing this collection was to how I could use my recent love affair with minimal chic in myriad ways to suit different moods and occasions. I wanted to design a complete wardrobe for women who like fuss free yet elegant looks which they can wear for day or for chic evenings or when they take some time off for a luxe safari," said the designer.
"I wanted to create eclectic wardrobe so that they don't have to follow same look each day. There are prints in the collection that were inspired by exotic flora and fauna or there are hand-painted intriguing prints or abstracts that take you on a galactic trail but all of them have a sense of escapism," he added.
Apart from this, the designer is also busy with Bollywood projects and other international assignments.
"I have styled for celebrities like Katrina (Kaif), Deepika(Padukone), Kareena (Kapoor) and considering some more projects, which will increase my reach and clientele. Also, there are many socialites like Queeny Dhodhy, Feroz Gujral, Gayatri Oberoi who wears and appreciates my clothes," he said.
"There is an exhibition in Louvre during Paris fashion week, next season, and then Wills Lifestyle India Fashion week. Besides that there will be many events we are holding in various countries in Europe," he added.

DoSomething.org and Macy’s Partner to Activate Youth for Back to School Season

“America’s Got Talent” host Nick Cannon Asks Young People to Join and Volunteer in their Communities

DoSomething.org and Macy's partner for a back to school campaign, featuring a QR video in Macy's mstylelab department with Kelly Osbourne.DoSomething.org and Macy’s are partnering for a back to school campaign that offers students the chance to make real impact in their communities. Launching on August 8th, the initiative will connect young people across the country with DoSomething.org and provide them volunteer opportunities in their area.
Running through October 15th, this mobile campaign calls for young people to visit their local Macy’s mstylelab departments (formerly juniors and young men’s) to take part in a scan-to-donate program that celebrates and rewards youth activism. In return for scanning the designated QR codes, Macy’s will donate $1, up to a total of $250,000*, to DoSomething.org. The scan will trigger the $1 donation and teens will have the opportunity to find out ways to take action locally around issues, such as bullying and the environment, in their community.
In addition to in-store efforts, young people can take part in a social media activation that helps youths “Raise your thumb. Rock your cause.” For every “like” on the mstylelab Facebook page, Macy’s will donate $1, up to $250,000, to DoSomething.org. (*Total Donation of $250,000 includes in-store scans and online Facebook activations.) DoSomething.org will reach out to all youth who participate in this program to help them find ways to take action around the causes about which they’re most passionate.
The campaign launches with a Public Service Announcement (PSA) from DoSomething.org supporter and “America’s Got Talent” host Nick Cannon, who encourages youth to add volunteering to their back to school routine.
“I represent youth empowerment in whatever way you possibly can do it, whether that is in your community or for yourself. Do Something has always been a great channel, a great platform for kids to funnel their energy through,” says Nick. “I hope Do Something plays a major part in my kids’ lives.”
Kelly Osbourne, the current face of the Material Girl clothing line, will also be featured in a QR video in Macy’s mstylelab departments inviting young people to support the causes they care about through this campaign.
“We are excited to partner with DoSomething.org in an effort to mobilize youth around causes they care about,” said Martine Reardon, Macy’s executive vice president of marketing. “We’ve been so inspired by the amazing work of the DoSomething.org members, and we hope our program will bring added awareness and funding to the organization so it can engage and enable more kids to take meaningful action.”
Macy’s and DoSomething.org will be rewarding youth who take action and report back about what they did. Young people who take the Do Something Cause quiz will be entered to win a $250 shopping spree from Macys, and scholarships will be rewarded by DoSomething.org to the best submitted projects.
“A chance to make real change in your community AND win a shopping spree? A trip to the mall doesn’t get better than that,” said Nancy Lublin, CEO and Chief Old Person at DoSomething.org.

Creative Edge PR Announces the Melange Fashion Show at San Francisco Design Center

Mélange Fashion Show 2011 unites local & international talent with big brands, Nicole Miller, Sephora & Gordon Biersch on August 6, 2011.
Designers and spectators are flying out from Croatia, Australia, NYC, Boston, and more to attend the Mélange Fashion Show 2011. This event will be at the San Francisco Design Center on August 6, 2011, and confirmed partners for the event include Nicole Miller, Sephora, Gordon Biersch, YesStyle.com, and popchips. The purpose of the show is to celebrate diversity and self-love in the fashion industry by featuring designers and models from diverse backgrounds.
The Mélange Fashion Show 2011 features an elegant blend of fashion, theater, music and dance. The show is divided into three scenes (Genesis, Annihilation & Resurrection). It features an original love narrative of two female protagonists, Angelica and Soledad, who bring each other to the near point of destruction, but are subsequently united through love and harmony. The two characters represent different energies of the universe—this allegory serves to support Mélange’s mission of understanding individuals from diverse backgrounds. Throughout the story, Korean drumming, Bhangra, Hip Hop, and more will be showcased. Over 15 designers will be featured from around the world, ranging from international designers to local talent in San Francisco. This story line and medley of artistic mediums flawlessly tie together and transition into runway segments of incredible clothing, creating a new genre of entertainment, coined the “Cirque du Soleil of Fashion.” Confirmed fashion participants include Nicole Miller, Suzaan Heyns, Prajje 1983, Carmen Chen Wu and more. Three student designers and three international designers will be recognized with awards at the event; designers are excited by this exposure opportunity and are traveling as far as Croatia to attend the show and showcase their garments.
“We aim to empower our community members to participate in the changing perception of health and beauty by showcasing an image of beauty that is reflective of the rich diversity of modern society,” says Lani Wyche, the Chief Business Officer of Mélange Productions, Inc. Mélange embraces models of all ethnicities, shapes, sizes, and ages as well as designers from diverse backgrounds. The start up just recently incorporated in January of 2011, and the founders of the company decided to create Mélange in response to other fashion conglomerates that feature a certain body type and image. Since incorporating, Mélange has already worked with established brands, including SKYY Vodka, Hansen’s Soda, Sprinkles Cupcakes, and more. “Brands are excited to work with us, because they identify with our mission and purpose of advocating a healthy and diverse image of beauty,” states Nick Navarro, Chief Executive Officer of the company.
In just seven short months, Mélange’s three young co-founders, Talia, Lani & Nick, have garnered incredible industry support, including securing Bill Guttentag, Oscar-winning movie producer, on the Mélange Board of Advisors. Other prominent Board members include: Guila Kessous, Jean Paul Gaultier’s former Creative Director; Jay Calderin, the founder of Boston Fashion Week; Katiti Kironde, the first African American Woman on the cover of Glamour; and Barry Libert, world known social media author and Chairman of Mzinga. These industry leaders are all united and inspired by the mission of Mélange to embrace and celebrate diversity through the arts.
The audacity and vision of the Mélange co-founders is truly an inspiration to young entrepreneurs around the world. In a fashion world dominated by a nearly unachievable body type and image, Mélange is well poised as an industry pioneer in changing the perception of health and beauty in the fashion world. The current success and traction of Mélange in their brief history of existence reveals a bright future for the company, and the Mélange Fashion Show 2011 on August 6th will be an unforgettable evening of entertainment, not to be missed by any person or publication.

Whale Feces Reduce Global Warming
Australia, (Hybrid News)

Australian researchers found that whale feces is useful to combat global warming. Feces of mammals, according to Australian scientists, is a natural fertilizer for marine plants that allows the sea to absorb carbon dioxide in greater numbers.

Latest research from the Australian Antarctic Division said that the pope issued a iron-rich faeces naturally fertilize the water surface. This causes the entire ecosystem of sending more carbon into deep water.

"Plants (sea) like it and actually it is one way to pull carbon out of the atmosphere," said Steve Nicol Antarctic scientists to a news agency quoted from the ABC News page. Nicol added that the whale feces could be liquid or solid.

Research says if the number of whales increases, their droppings can help marine plants or algae are well developed, thus increasing the ability of the ocean to absorb carbon dioxide which causes global warming merupakn.

Iron is a vital element for the growth of algae which absorb carbon dioxide when the plants are growing. Nevertheless, iron is a rare element in the ocean south.
