Srinagar: Abdullah Uni, the most wanted Lashkar-e-Taiba militant in the Kashmir Valley, was gunned down in a shootout with security forces in Sopore town Tuesday, police said. Uni was responsible for more than 20 killings, and had masterminded the killing of senior cleric Maulana Shaukat Ahmad Shah.
He is believed to have masterminded the killing of Jamiat-e-Ahl-e-Hadees chief Maulana Shaukat Ahmad Shah earlier this year.
Superintendent of Police Sayed Imtiyaz Hussain told IANS that Uni was killed in a gunfight in Baghat locality, a densely populated area in the old town area of Sopore Tuesday afternoon.
The security forces, based on specific information that militants were hiding in the area, zeroed in on a house in the locality. They came under heavy automatic gunfire, triggering retaliatory fire from the security forces,
Uni's real name is Azhar Malik, and he is the son of Riyaz Malik of Multan, in Pakistan.
